The boom in Spanish narrative is a fact. It encompasses the press, shop windows, offers for translations and lists of super-sales in a virtually logarithmic ascent. A reflection of the Spanish novel through the history of the last few decades helps mark the important milestones, moments of rupture and breach, traditions and future challenges, analyzing the contributions of the social and political change as well as the problems derived from a free market economy by involving a trade as delicate as that of artistic creation. Key works are indicated and the names of authors to follow their tracks; trends, influences and risks to take are reviewed. In the end, the bet is on a future healthy and vigorous novel going against the winds and tides of the end of the century.
