This article describes the formation and evolution of the first truly revolutionary institution created by Chile's socialist president, Salvador Allende: namely, his personal security force known as the Group of Personal Friends (Grupo de Amigos Personales, GAP). The article traces the history of this unit from its origins up to the armed conflict in the La Moneda palace, describing the different phases of the organization and the diversity of its functions, as well as the close relationship between the Chile's leftwing parties and movements, on the one hand, and La Habana on the other.
