With a few months’ difference, both Soviet communism as well as French socialism and Italian Christian democracy have recently fallen apart in Europe. In the face of those collapses, this essay asks the question of how far can democracy be expected to prevail over corruption on this side of the Atlantic. Starting from Greek doctrine on corruption of the forms of government, the author discusses investigations on corruption from Saint Thomas and Vico to Van Klaveren and other contemporary authors.
