In December 1982, at the initiative of Centro de Estudios Públicos, a group of Chilean lawyers met with professor Ernst J. Mestmacker, director of the Max Planck Institute for Private Foreign and International Law of Hamburg.
The original subject of the discussion, which included a variety of commercial law issues, was ultimately reduced to topics related to free competition, on which Prof. Mestmacker is one of the most renowned European specialists. Given the high level of the debate and the permanent interest of the issues discussed, the invited guests and the participating lawyers agreed to publish the conversation.
Prof. Mestmacker has subsequently authorized publication of the version which now appears in Estudios Públicos.
The following lawyers participated in the meeting, Juan Manuel Baraona, Antonio Bascuñán, Helmut Brunner, Carlos Concha, Juan Carlos Dorr, Patricio Fuentes, José Tomás Guzmán, Carlos Larraín, Waldo Ortúzar, Julio Philippi, Jorge Streeter, Carlos Urenda, and Enrique Barros acting as coordinator. The latter thanks all participants for agreeing to publication of this colloquium in Estudios Públicos.
