In order to contribute to the analysis of the economic growth policies and the importance that free trade agreements have in that context, a round table was held in Centro de Estudios Públicos on October 4, 1993 with prominent specialists in the matter. This round table was chaired by Jorge Cauas, Advisor to Centro de Estudios Públicos. Two foreign guests participated: Michael Walker, President of The Fraser Institute (Canada), and Michael Levy, Vice President of Nations Bank (USA), as well as the Chilean economists Felipe Larraín and Juan Andrés Fontaine, both professors at the Institute of Economics of the Catholic University of Chile. In the first part of the meeting, dedicated to examining the effects of free trade agreements, Mr. Walker commented on the central features of the North American Free Trade Agreement and the advantageous consequences its approval would have. On his part, Mr. Larraín analyzed the significance that Chile’s entry to Nafta could have on the country’s economy as well as the signature of other trade agreements. In the second part of the round table, Mr. Fontaine and Mr. Levy discussed the evolution of economic policies applied in the last 10 years in their respective countries, Chile and United States, as well as the actual economic cycle and its future prospects. Finally, this edition contains the commentary made by Mr. Cauas at the end of the expositions by the panelists.
