On the basis of the size and ownership structure of agricultural properties, the following article concludes that it would be highly inappropriate to implement an agrarian reform policy in Chile. 92.5% of agricultural properties measure less than 100 hectares. The argument historically wielded in favor of that reform –the existence of great landed estates in our country– is thus invalidated. The distribution in terms of the quality of soil, government appraisal and size of properties shows that only 0.13% of the total land would be subject to a reform. Nothing indicates, as a result, the pros of such reform if the intent is to achieve development and growth in the agricultural sector.
