The definitive German edition of the works of Franz Kafka has provided an opportunity to re-read his novels, published in a new Spanish translation, with the perspective provided by the century just ended. The forceful current relevance of his vision and the potentially infinite interpretations of his work, most of which is unfinished, make him one of the most important authors of the twentieth century. This article attempts to make some remarks on such a re-reading -its appeal, the game of mirrors that Kafka's writing poses for the reader, and its disturbing never-revealed secret.
