These pages reproduce the report prepared by the Mathematics Commission, convened by Centro de Estudios Públicos, on the new system of admission to higher education contained in the SIES project. The Commission’s technical analysis includes an assessment of the innovative aspects of SIES and a comparison between the current admission tests in mathematics (PAA-mathematics and specific mathematics tests) and the SIES mathematics test. The Commission’s view of the new measures included in the SIES, is that only the proposal to establish comparable scores is wholly convincing. The other innovations —elimination of the specific mathematics test; introduction of semi-correct answer alternatives; and complete renewal of the team responsible for the admission tests— would be seriously misguided. Consequently, the Commission comes down categorically against the application of mathematics tests based on the SIES paradigm. Instead it suggests making gradual changes to the PAA, enriching it with a number of important topics that are already contained in the secondary school curriculum.
