What is cloning and why should we care? Should we wait until monstrous results, like in the case of thalydomide, force us to recognize that it is a road that humanity should never have taken? Alfonso Gómez-Lobo, a member of the U.S. President’s Council on Bioethics, explains in this essay exactly what human cloning is and he analyzes the different positions that have been put forth to judge it ethically while at the same time providing his own. Prohibiting reproductive cloning, the author notes, is an illusion unless any form of human cloning is prohibited since we would inevitably enter "slippery ground." Can this process be stopped? Perhaps it can if there is an international movement that is able to disseminate the implications of human cloning.
