In this essay, the author highlights the importance of liberalism in Chile both in the 19th as well as the 20th century. He then goes on to argue that the most significant problem for liberalism in our times lies in the issue of education. He sustains that liberalism cannot prosper without the development of a public education system and that it is precisely in that area where the contradiction between liberalism and Catholicism in Chile is seen more clearly.
