The article argues the need to harmonize the logic of the Enlightened matrix with that of the Romantic matrix, in different orders, with a view towards politically organizing communal life inside multicultural nations. As concerns contemporary discussion, it separates waters, on the one hand, from cultural fundamentalism and, on the other, from post-modern relativism. It is in this perspective that the author examines stances and cases in Europe, the United States and Latin America.
