This article argues that the foundation of ethics (as theoretical knowledge) is moral experience. This experience is sui generis because it implies a relationship with another human being. The "properly human" relationship with another human being is communication (verbal, gestual, mimical ...). A moral experience is, largely, an experience of rupture, of conflict, whose is the offense. Apropos of this basic sentiment (offense), the meaning of forgiveness is examined, that is, of overcoming passion, of suffering of the offense. The action of asking for forgiveness is analyzed —which is first in the order of the meaning— as well as the "event" of granting that forgiveness.
