Some thinkers are a landmark in our intellectual history. Adam Smith is one of them. In celebration of 230 years since the publication of An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations (WN, 1776), a set of essays in this volume highlight the relevance to modern debate of a thinker considered to be one of the great pillars of liberal thought. This introduction to the series of essays begins by emphasizing, quite succinctly, some aspects of the life and work of Adam Smith. It then partially analyzes how Smith’s work was received, with special emphasis on some of the more recent contributions concerning the research on his legacy. It ends with the principal objective of this brief introduction, which is to present the essays that follow it.
