This article is a critical commentary on the text by Aldo Mascareño published in this edition. It does not discuss Mascareño’s critique of an essencialist concept of culture, but it does dispute his attempt to deconstruct it until it becomes conceptually and theoretically exsanguine. After inspecting the two traditions that would underly the loss of analytical value in the concept of culture, namely the systemic sociology of Luhman and post-modernism or post-structuralism, the commentary suggests an interpretation of the concept of culture that is capable of continuing to yield theoretically.
