Estudios Públicos: Nº 105, 2007.THE HONECKER CASE, NATIONAL INTEREST AND CHILEAN FOREIGN POLICY: OUTLINES AND BACKGROUND TO A “DOMESTIC” PROBLEMIvan Witker(author)
This study analyses the arrival of the deposed President of the Democratic Republic of Germany, Erich Honecker, at the Chilean Embassy in Moscow, its circumstances, motives and consequences. Firstly it looks at the existence of a problem that was unheard of in Chilean diplomacy. Then it investigates the "invisible power" that moved the spiral of mutual emotional loyalties, so characteristic of the close relationship between Chile and the GDR. It goes on to examine a group of political and historical themes that help to explain the problem, such as the underworld of Chilean politics, the "lateral diplomacy" of the GDR, diplomatic relations between the countries during the government of Allende, the huge number of Chilean exiles and their confrontation with real socialism, the Stasi’s interest in Chilean problems and other themes. It concludes by asking whose interests were served by receiving Honecker in the Chilean embassy.
