The article discusses the relation between luck, equality and responsibility from the point of view of a recent theory of distributive justice called "luck egalitarianism." Luck egalitarianism intends to reconcile some egalitarians demands with the idea that people should be considered responsible for the consequences of their voluntary choices. There are some inequalities that are the product of luck —for instance, to be born in dire poverty or to be victim of certain kind of diseases. According to luck egalitarians, such inequalities should be compensated. But those inequalities that are the product of people’s choices are, form the point of view of the theory in question, legitimate. This conciliatory project makes luck egalitarianism part of the family of theories called "equality of opportunities." The aim of the article is to identify the main traits of luck egalitarianism and to present an objection to its conciliatory project.
