Fukuyama holds in this paper that there is not necessarily a causative and indefectible relationship between development and democracy, despite the positive correlation between both variables. One example, he says, is the high degree of development of countries under authoritarian regimes —such as the USSR in the early phases of its industrialization process, Franco’s Spain or certain nations in Southeast Asia. Apparently, there are other types of elements apart from economicist explanations, according to Fukuyama, such as the "desire for recognition," that better explain the trend towards democracy surviving after economic growth. The author indicates in turn the direction that political events will soon take in Asia that will confirm the validity of the suggested link between democracy and economic development.
